News from Lotus Cars
This is an update to what Lotus are up to with regard to the Esprit. There's plenty going on at the moment. Here's what we know:
Lotus have been doing a lot of investigating into the paint finish / corrosion on the fuel tanks (which they were informed about by LEW). They are checking every fuel tank they have in stock (Lotus have hundreds of tanks - 20 different part numbers going back many years). They are at present awaiting some tanks from their supplier to overcome some current part shortage on their spares department.
A new starter motor is on test – the current ones are running out (Lotus still have stock at the moment)
The 215/50ZR15 & 245/50 ZR16 Good Year Tyres are now getting difficult to get so Lotus are investigating alternatives (the 215 /50 is now becoming a non preferred size)
The Damper programme is due to start in Feb. The development dampers are being made by Bilstein now. Lotus are also looking at new springs at the same time. They will start with the V8 which will be the easiest car and then look at the others in turn. Lotus have to do them in a particular order as their Service stocks are due to run out at in a known order and they have to ensure they do not end up running out of parts). It will take several months to complete the exercise.
Esprit Items - Lots of other small things are being done to overcome problems with supply of parts - gauges, sender units, pressure switches, heater controls, side marker lights for USA, bonnet seals for early cars etc.

Warbrook House Meeting
LEW user Mark Blanchard attended the first Lotus meeting of the year on Sunday 9th Jan 2005, at Warbrook House in Hampshire. It’s an annual event organised by SELOC at the posh country house. The meet started at 2pm and there was a good turn out of car’s, with the usually popular SELOC Elise’s and also a good number of Esprit’s. There were so many car, they spilled out of the car park. The weather was ok to start and then the heavens opened, so everyone went in side, had some grub and chatted Esprit.
The following people turned up:
Jez (LRG S4s), Pete (silver SE), Geoff (red SE), Andrew (red S3), Dave (yellow GT3), Mark (red Turbo), Paul (white SE), ??? (BRG V8), Robin (EvilDrFish), Chris (Azure Elise S1)
OBDII PC interface with 1996 V8's
Lotus Esprit World have now had confirmation that the scan tool OBDII pc interface from Genden direct works with 1996 Esprit V8's. They run different diagnostics to the later V8's and there was uncertainty as to whether these tools would work with the earlier V8's. A LEW users has now confirmed that the software does work on these eariler V8's.
LEW Calendar Orders
All remaining Calendar orders will be shipped on 10th January 2005. There are a few calendars remaining, so you still have time to get your Esprit fix for the next 11 months and 20 days.
Any owner of an Esprit appearing in the 2005 calendar can get an extra copy of the Wall Calendar for the price of p&p only. Most owners have been contacted. But if you haven't been email with this offer and your Esprit is in the 2005 Calendar, just send a paypal or personal cheque for the postage & packaging and we will send you a free calendar.
Heater Cable Warning on S4s
by Dave Walters
There seems to be an ongoing issue with heater cables snapping. It's a relatively easy fix. The reason it snaps is because of 1. age and 2. users turning the knob too quickly. These should be treated with care and turned a little slower if you want to prolong the fatigue. The way in which it works is very similar to a bicycle cable with an inner and outer cable except with the heater cable, the inner cable is solid steel wire not woven cable strands. It needs to be like this as it's pushing as well as pulling flaps.
They way to fix it is to remove your radio and fascia. Remove the heater knobs. The smaller ones simply pull off. The larger ones however have a clip that needs to be pressed inside the hole (small screwdriver should do it). Remove the heater fascia by unscrewing the small philips screws x 2.
Now you need to disconnect the old outer cable and extend it by cutting more from the outer cable so the inner cable can be reconnected. I found it a lot easier removing the dial from the housing which was a simple job. Take care when cutting the outer cable, I used a craft knife so not to damage the inner cable. Do not use electrical pliers. Reassemble in reverse order. I now have a working heater! job took about an hour.
The reason for this warning is mainly to warn other owners not to move their heater dials so quickly as this firstly causes the inner cable to kink or buckle. Then after a short while it will break. So look after your cable.
This applies to the S4s and other Esprit's with the same system.
Work for 2005
As mention below there's quite a few piece of work to be done on LEW's Esprit and to be reported here for your information. Hopefully with the poor weather in the UK from January to April there'll be plenty of time to get everything done for the finer weather, when the Esprit should be on the road.
Look out for the following:
Electric Chargecooler Install
Gearbox oil change
Rear wing mounting
Carbon Fibre Number plate surround
Remember, if you are doing anything to your Esprit. Take plenty of pictures and write up a guide (see other guides to see what info's needed) and send it in to LEW so other owners can benefit from your experiences. There's only so much we can do to our Esprit!
Happy New Year
Lotus Esprit World would like to wish it's users and Esprit owners throughout the world a Happy New Year.
