LEW's Suspension
After testing the Sport 350 suspension on LEW's 4-cylinder Esprit, it was found to have too much rebound for the lighter 4-cylinder machines. With the V8 weighing 50kg more at the rear and 37kg more at the front compared to a standard 4-cylinder (not alone LEW's lighten Esprit), the suspension is too stiff and gives a poor ride once the Esprit is pushed.

LEW has purchased some second-hand GT3 suspension from a club member. Now you may think that GT3 suspension wouldn't be the best choice for an SE, as the GT3 is the light-weight Esprit. But after talking to Lotus, LEW found out that the S4 & S4s suspension was updated to one type. This was then also fitted to the GT3, so all three models run on the same suspension now. GT3 owners might have wondered by their cars seem to ride a little higher than most other Esprits. This is your answer, it's running the same suspension as the S4 and S4s, which are slightly heavier cars, giving the GT3 about 10mm extra height. Obviously this doesn't affect the handling negatively, as the GT3 is one of the best handling Esprits.

The suspension LEW has purchase has been on a GT3 for a few years and is looking rusty and dirty, as all Lotus suspension seems to get very quickly. LEW is having the springs & dampers sand blasted and powder coated next week but a local firm. The brand new looking springs & dampers will then go onto LEW's Esprit at a local wheel alignment specialist, where it will also have the geometry set up to factory settings from the workshop manual. This should give LEW's Esprit the handling and feel of the S4s.

An article will be done on the suspension clean-up and powder coating and also on the fitting and geometry set-up. Once the Sport 350 suspension has been taken off, it will be available for sale on the parts page for V8, V8-GT or V8-SE owners who wish for a better suspension set-up for their Esprits. The 350 springs & dampers have done only 15,000 miles and will a new set costing over £2,000 it will be a bargain for someone.

LEW's Wing
LEW removed the high-wing of it's Esprit SE a while ago mainly for visual reasons. After asking Lotus to look into the wings on Esprits, the information coming back wasn't good for LEW's Esprit. Basically the worse combination according to their testing and wind tunnel work is no-wing and a short transom (lip at the back of the car), which is what LEW's Esprit is now running. This set-up promotes oversteer (you can see the other information towards the bottom of wingeffects page).

LEW doesn't really want to be seen running a poor set-up on it's Esprit, so there are two choices. Add a wing (S350 being the best) or change the transom to the larger one. LEW is currently investigating what's involved in changing the transom over and also the cost and availability of Sport 350, Sport 300 or late V8 wings. So expect to see a slightly different look for LEW's Esprit in the future.

LEW Oxford Meeting
As those of you that made it will know, the meeting was very successful and probably the best so far. Brian and Geoff from Lotus where kept very busy, Derek Bell was giving everybody details of the gearbox upgrade and 53 Esprits made things most entertaining. A report is now on the site here. Also the wings page has been updated with the info supplied by Lotus on the day, as has the paint and ECU pages. A very successful day all in all.

–––––––––––––––

Electric Chargecooler Update
LEW's WC pump was sent to Lotus a few weeks back and their engineers have come up with a safe installation guide. LEW has been supplied back a full installation guide and a new wiring loom. This will be fitted to LEW's Esprit in the coming weeks and a full guide supplied on the site. LEW is also trying to see if the wiring looms can be made available for owners. More information as we get it.

Lotus Esprit World Desktop Calendar 2005
LEW has been busy working away at a Limited Edition Desktop version of the LEW Calendar. This version is CD size and comes in a special CD case that opens up to form a stand for your LEW calendar. Inside will be 15 'throw away' sheets from December 2004 to December 2005 as with the main wall calendar. Each sheet will have the same Esprit for each month as the as the main calendar.

You can get an idea from the pictures above on how the calendar will look, the pictures are of a demo version made up, so quality will be increase for the printed version. LEW is currently finalising details with a sponsor and will be looking to go to press towards the end of September. The Desktop Calendar will be available on LEW's E-shop sometime in October.

Lotus Esprit World Official Calendar 2005
While on the subject of the Calendar. The Official Calendar has been finalised, with the final 12 Esprits chosen. It was a really tough choice this year, with some great pictures missing out (they have been kept for 2006). The calendar will be going to press as soon as the financial side is sorted out and will be available, as the Desktop Calendar, at the LEW E-shop sometime on October.

Currently LEW is sorting prices out and will be offering a discount to Club LEW members. This year there will also be a pre-order system, where orders will be taken and all the calendars will go out in one or two batches. More information on how to order nearer the time.

GT3 Blow Out

Cannonball 8000
After the huge success of the Cannonball 3000 -2003, the Cannonball team have planned the sequel - The Cannonball 8000!!!
The Cannonball 8000 starts on the 17th of September and runs over the next 48 hours of the 18th and 19th of September 2004. It promises to hold just as many legendary stories and laughs as the previous year with more hi-speed chases across France and Italy and wild parties that run from dusk till dawn.

Of course the Cannonball 8000 is not a race. The event captures the true spirit of the Cannonball, with entrants from all different backgrounds including original Cannonballers from the runs across the states in the 70's, Oil riggers, Vets and just a cool bunch of people who have a great spirit of adventure.

Esprit owner David Ryder-Ashforth has entered in his 1998 V8-GT, so hopefully we'll get to see plenty of that. ITV and Men & Motors will be covering the event, so look out for David's Esprit.

2005 Calendar Selection Process
Selection of the final 13 pictures for the LEW 2005 Calendar is currently in full swing. LEW has five more pictures to come (S1, S3, S300, S350, V8 03) before the final selection is made. This will be finalised in the next two weeks. Printing will then proceed, with orders being taken at the beginning of October.

As you can see, all pictures that have passed the quality and resolution screening have been printed out and are hung at calendar height to help with selecting the best shots for the calendar. As at present only one of each model is selected for the calendar, so there will be some very unlucky Esprits missing out. Hottest models at the moment are the SE and Steven's Turbo, with some great pictures of each model. Only one will make it!

LEW is also working on a desktop calendar, which may be printed later than the wall calendar. More details of this will be available soon. Keep an eye on the site or more news on next years hottest Esprit item!

LEW/Yahoo! Oxford Meeting: Lotus Attending
The Second annual LEW/Yahoo! Oxford Meeting this year will be on Sunday 26th September 2004. It's worth making a special effort to make it for this meet as Lotus have confirmed that two Engineers will be attending from the factory at Hethel (hopefully in the Engineering Departments Esprit V8 US spec, which can be seen being built on the production line in the Esprit DVD). You'll be able to speak to them about the Esprit and take advantage of their endless knowledge. Esprit Platform Manager Brian Angus will be doing a pre-dinner speech on what's happening with regard to the Esprit at the factory, so you can find out how Lotus are supporting current Esprit owners (don't expect to get anything out of them with regard to the new Esprit). So make sure you don't miss out on this opportunity to get close to the makers of your supercar.

Time to remember how luck we are
My boy and I went to Tesco's to do a bit of shopping the other day, and I parked my GT3 in the usual parent and child parking places (the ONLY place to park these cars!). On my return with the shopping there was a dodgy looking transit along side the rear of my car with a couple of young people in it, and a third person around my car running his hands and fingers over it!

As I approuched my car somewhat inwardly concerned, the chap driving the van explained to me that the young guy touching it was infact blind. Looking at him and chatting it was obvious he was getting great pleasure feeling all the curves and edges of the car, feeling the wheels, where the lights pop up, the rear wing etc. etc.

I asked him, knowing that sound is very important to blind people if he would like to hear it – a quick turn of the key and he was blessed with the sound of the twin exit stainless system, with a few revs up and the crackle pop on the over-run, he was positively beaming!

I must say that moments like these make Esprit ownership a wonderful thing and should make us realise how lucky infact we all are.

OZ Paint Codes for the Lotus Esprit Nova Wheels
There seemed to be some problems with locating the paint codes for the new Esprit Nova wheels after one user needed some damage fixing. LEW now has the paint codes from OZ for these wheels, so scraping the kerb will no longer require redoing all the wheels or buying a new one. The codes have also been added to the V8 2002 model page, under the 'models' section.

The painting is from AKZO nobel and the code is::
• 7E85305 for painting silver
• 6880302 for black first painting
• 5K20023 for transparent

August 2004

Mark Thatcher & the Esprit
As Master Thatcher has been in the news recently for trying to overthrow a government (not his mum's!). I thought he would be good enough for LEW's news page. Mark worked for Lotus in the 80's helping with promoting the brand in the US (unsuccessfully I hear). He also owned an Essex Turbo, which he is pictured in above getting some attention from parking officials! Hopefully Mark won't take offence to our news story and attempt to take control of LEW!

Chargecooler Pump Update
LEW has received an electric chargecooler pump from WC Engineering in the US. Esprit NA Engine Upgrade
Lotus Esprit World has recently become aware of an engine upgrade package available  for all 900 series engines that will probably be of interest to Esprit owners.

Engineering development was by ‘Ultimate Performance’ in Northamptonshire who spent considerable time (nearly a year!) extracting the very best from the components using their considerable expertise in the field of performance engine development.  It was originally developed to give NA cars the kind of power normally associated with 910 turbo’s, but since it is based around a precision gas flowed head, it will give benefits for all 900 series engines. Just as an indicator, its giving 220 bhp on a 912 engine fitted with 104 cams and re-jetted carbs.

Sounds perfect for all those Esprit owners who are running without a turbo, with includes both Giugiaro and Stevens models! More information on the upgrade package in the very near future.

Well now the DVD is available to purchase for your viewing pleasure. LEW has reviewed the DVD version (extra footage from the TV show) for everyone, so you can get an idea of what's on it. LEW highly recommends this DVD to all Esprit Enthusiast (and not just because kato from LEW stars). Read the review and see what you think!

Chargecooler Pump
There's been a lot of talk on Chargecooler pumps over the last few weeks on LEW, with owners contacting the site asking about broken pumps and what to replace them with. There's is now a Technical page and a impellor replacement guide, with an Electric pump replacement page coming soon. Lotus have also contact LEW about maintenance schedules for impellors, which as been published on the Technical page.

LEW has today heard that the tooling to produce the Chargecooler pump body and end cover is no longer available (supplier in liquidation) but Lotus have confirmed that their supplier will still be able to provide all the other components for the pump. Lotus plan is to put together a kit of parts that will enable the existing pumps to be overhauled with the original parts. It is unlikely that the pump body will need replacing in the life of the car. Every other part needed to service the pump and bring it up to 'as new' condition will be available. Lotus are also looking into the electric pump option as an alternative, with their main concern being a stable & safe power supply for the pump.

Now this is sad news, as it seems original Esprit parts are going to become harder and harder to get hold of. Luckily this particular part shortage shouldn't be a problem, as with the gearboxes, Lotus can recon them to keep cars on the road. Hopefully Electric pumps will put an end to the need for the old type of pump in the near future.

Turbo Esprit Tyre News
Lotus Esprit World has managed to get a World Exclusive on testing done at Hethel on replacement tyres for Giugiaro Turbos. Lotus have now completed testing and are waiting for TUV approval, which is expect to be a formality. So any owners with Giugiaro Turbos can now buy and fit tyres tested and recommended by Lotus for their model. Below is the information direct from Lotus.

Lotus Turbo Esprit Tyres
Lotus has now completed the Tyre Investigation to find and approve an alternative to the currently specified Good Year Eagle NCT that is now obsolete. The sizes currently specified are: -

Front 195/60 VR 15
Rear 235/60 VR 15

The rear size of 235/60x15 is now a non-standard size and availability is very limited. Lotus has now completed an assessment of alternative tyres & sizes. In order to ensure vehicle compliance (tyre coverage & speedo calibration etc.) tyre choice was restricted. The new recommendation is as follows:

Front 195/60 VR 15
Rear 225/60 VR 15

The above specification has been tested & approved by Lotus. The TUV approval documentation has been completed and the application submitted to the relevant authority to cover the German Registered vehicles.

Several manufacturers tyres were tested. The following were considered to give the best handling & ride package and would be the products recommended by Lotus.

Pirelli P6000
Dunlop SP Sport 01

Other makes of tyres tested did not produce the handling / ride requirements that Lotus consider desirable for the Esprit Turbo vehicle.

Electric Chargecooler Pump
Lotus Esprit World will be fitting an Electric Chargecooler Pump in the coming weeks. LEW's Esprit isn't in need of a replacement as the mechanical one is working well after being recon'd in 2001, but due to the increasing number of pumps failing and general interest in the Esprit community LEW feels this would be a valuable guide.

Recently a few owners have contacted LEW about replacing their chargecooler pump after being told by garages that a new one is required and have been quote £300+ just for the pump. Most pumps can be recon'd using a Lotus kit (£40+) with a new impellor at very worst. At best just fit a new Electric Pump at around £100. If you're taking the old one out, most of the hard work has been done, so it would be mad not to go for the Electric one.

The mechanical pump runs off the engine at half the rpm of the engine, so flat out at 7,000rpm the pump is running at 3,500rpm, at tick over of pump is running at only around 500rpm. An electric pump will give you a constant high-flow at all times and should last the life of the car. So you'll be getting a better working system, with much less chance of it failing. There's more info on the chargecooler page under Technical.

If you're unsure if your chargecooler is working, then you can use FreeScan to check. There's a section in the FreeScan Manual about how to check to see how your chargecooler is performing. Remember if it's not working properly you can lose a huge amount of performance.

WC Engineering
Lotus Esprit World will using a pump supplied by WC Engineering in the US. After looking around at a few other options, this item seemed the best around. You can also get the plug that will be needed to fill the hole left from removing the old mechanical one. Total cost, including p&p is only $178, which around £100. A full guide to fitting this kit will be on LEW soon.

WC Engineering also do a few more performance items for the Esprit. LEW will be looking to test a few more items from this Esprit friendly company during the rest of the year. So watch out for those. In the meantime, have a look at their site to see what they can offer. Mention Lotus Esprit World if you contact them, they have also been added to the Parts page.
